Hi, my name is Nikki and I am the owner of the Baa Baa Knitting Company and I have been passionate about yarn since... forever! I grew up in Dublin, Ireland and came to England when I was only 18. I learnt to knit, like you may have done, by my Gran's side. Well my Gran, my Mam and my Dad! Yes, my dad had gotten involved with the learning process, possibly due to my Mam and Gran having so many projects on the go and I required a lot of help! Although my Dad wasn't a knitter, he knows how. And how could he not!? His Mam, had won prizes for her craft work: knitting, crochet, needle craft, baking. You name it, she had a trophy for it. Rather impressive. She had nearly always worked in lace weight yarn, which astounded me! I was so slow at the time, nothing would grow fast enough for me, unless it was aran weight or above! Lace weight yarn was something I was never going to touch! Oh how things change!
My Mam's Mam and my Mam would always end the day, with their knitting in their hands and when ever we went to my Grans house she would take her knitting with her too. The two of them would knit in the evening, watching some telly before we would leave to come home. It wasn't just the making of practical things, it was a social aspect, a coming together of a mother and a daughter, sharing skills and chat and supporting each other.
I know there will be lots of people with similar memories of family members knitting and chatting throughout their childhood and these memories are comforting in their own right, but they also bring the joy of the skills too, that we learnt as children. Knitting isn't just a hobby, or something we do to help with mindfulness etc. It is often a memory of a happy place, of a knitted garment that was made with love; being wrapped in soft cosy warmth of a family member. Although, sometimes it was of warm, scratchy, odd shaped jumper, or just down right embarrassing! The jigsaw jumpers my Mam made for myself and my sister! Identical items of clothing that she had lovingly made us; her two girls! 6 years apart and I was about 14! Mortifying!!! Emotionally blackmailed into wearing them and then been sent out in public with your little sister in tow, wearing hers with pride and then you spot the boy you are madly in love with at the time! Knitting it can bring such Joy!!!
